ESRI Unveils ArcGIS Explorer - View the Demo

A few weeks ago, ESRI officially unveiled ArcGIS Explorer (AGE), a world data viewer in the ilk of Google Earth. Rather than try to contrast and compare, you can view this brief MPEG demo. Downloading a version of AGE is free (registration required). You'll need to download a few "globes" as well to add the data you want to view from the ERSI website that supports AGE. Even more data and resources are available for the also newly unveiled ArcGIS Online, now in a beta mode.

I'm sure the demo video is impressive, but how about uploading it to YouTube so those of us who are behind firewalls can view it. MPEG is probably one of the most blocked file types out there in the corporate world.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before ESRI jumped on the globe exploring bandwagon. For a short while, I was excited, figuring that ESRI would produce a product that would make it easier and more accurate to incorporate my own data. Then I installed it, and my machine bluescreened. I gave it another chance, with the same result. I suppose that's the difference between ESRI and Google. Google makes sure a product works (even a product in beta) before they release it.

I'd have to agree on the BSOD and lack of useability - I installed it and tried to load in my own shape and image data, but to no avail. Just hung there at 100% CPU.

As GE is not a 'GIS' package, we had put some high hopes on what ArcExplorer could do...we're on strike 2.5 out of 3...

I was wondering what environment you tried to install ArcGIS Explorer on, causing it to blue screen?
